Field Quarter

I will be partaking in this awesome course starting April 1st...

Course overview: Field Quarter is a 15-unit program composed of three upper division Environmental Studies courses: California Vegetation (ENVS 107A), Natural History of California (ENVS 107B), and Preservation and Management of California Natural Lands (ENVS 107C). The course schedules are intermeshed and students must take all three courses concurrently. Students should understand that all courses require both classroom and field work.

Field Quarter involves field study at natural areas in at least four distinct parts of California. Field trips are 8 to 12 days long and are interspersed with weeks of campus-based activities. The sites chosen for this year's Field Quarter are the following:

The Sweeney Granite Mountains Reserve in the Mojave Desert
The Landels Hill-Big Creek Reserve in Big Sur
The Angelo North Coast Reserve in Mendocino County
The Sierra Nevada and Mono Lake

Field Quarter requires a serious commitment to a full schedule of course activities. There will be rugged all-day hiking, long-distance travel, and living and studying closely with a small group throughout the quarter. Participants are expected to possess and use field, camping, and hiking gear. In the past, students have not found it practical to try to hold down regular jobs during field quarter.

Life Update Photo Dump

Wow. It's been quite awhile since I've entered into the realm of blogging. I had my first day as an intern working for the UCSC Younger Lagoon Reserve off campus about 2 miles up the coast. It was awesome. I'll be working there once a week for 7 hours learning about California native and invasive species, helping with established research projects, and various other tasks as well as help plan new projects. The reserve is 72 acres, formerly a brussel sprouts farm now turned UCSC owned restoration land for research and development. I LOVED it there today.
